Grand Junction Families Are Paying More at Gas Pumps & Grocery Stores

If you're filling up in Grand Junction, you're paying $3.98 per gallon  right now. If you are feeling the pinch, you’re not alone. Gas prices across the state have jumped 31% in just one year. That means families here are paying a lot more at the pump, and there's no sign of it dropping back down anytime soon.

Grand Junction usually has some of the cheaper gas on the Western Slope — but "cheaper" doesn't mean cheap. The refineries that make our fuel are hundreds of miles away in Texas and North Dakota, and trucking it over the Rocky Mountains adds cost to every single gallon. On top of that, we have fewer gas stations competing than they do along the Front Range, so there's less pressure to keep prices low. The end result: folks in the Grand Valley pay more than families in Denver or Colorado Springs for the same tank.

Grocery Prices Are Way Up Too

Gas isn't the only thing squeezing our budgets, either. Groceries in Grand Junction already cost more than the national average — milk runs over $4.61 a gallon and a loaf of bread is $4.32. And it's climbing. For a broader inflation figure: the Denver, CO area's overall inflation rate hit 5% as of May 2026 — 0.8% higher than the national average. Beef prices are on track to jump more than 10% in 2026, with food economist David Ortega warning prices could stay elevated well into next year as the U.S. cattle herd hits its lowest level in 75 years.  Experts also warn that the full sting of tariffs hasn't hit store shelves yet — and when it does, later this year, prices could climb even more. For families already stretching every dollar across long drives and high gas bills, a bigger tab at City Market isn't just a number. It's one more thing that just doesn't add up.
